In 2006 Dennis M. McCarthy returned to Volkema Thomas – the law firm he helped found in the late 1980s – returning in the role Of Counsel following a twice-resumed career in the United States Marine Corps. He practices from his office in Washington D.C. at One Constitution Avenue N.E., focusing primarily on federal false claims law and providing strategic advice and counsel to the firm.

During a civilian and military career that has spanned 40 years, Mr. McCarthy has served with distinction as a trial lawyer representing families, individuals, local school boards and others who were injured through negligence or misconduct.

Dennis served as a platoon commander in the 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade in the Republic of Vietnam. Upon return to the U.S. in 1969, he served the Marines Corps as an inspector-instructor before being selected to attend law school.

Following graduation, he was a trial and defense counsel and Military Judge at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. After promotion to Major, he resigned his regular commission in 1978 and transferred to the Marine Corps Reserve, and then entered private practice in Columbus.

His first return to active duty came during Operation Desert Storm in 1990. Following Desert Storm, Mr. McCarthy returned to civilian practice, but once again was recalled to active duty in 1999. He retired from active duty Aug. 1, 2005, leaving the armed forces as a Lieutenant General having commanded over 100,000 Marines and Sailors during the most extensive Reserve mobilization in Marine Corps history.

He holds numerous military decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V," and the Combat Action Ribbon.

In Washington, Dennis maintains close contact with senior government, military and industry leaders. He serves on a corporate board, and is involved in a number of charitable endeavors.
