For Immediate Release
DENNIS M. McCARTHY, LIEUTENANT GENERAL, USMC (RETIRED), REJOINS VOLKEMA THOMAS, THE FIRM HE HELPED FOUND IN 1988
Returning to the law firm he began in the late 1980s following a twice-resumed career in the United State Marine Corps, Dennis M. McCarthy rejoined Columbus, Ohio-based Volkema Thomas in the role Of Counsel in 2006.
Serving with distinction on active duty from 1999 until last June, Lieutenant General McCarthy, USMC (Retired), has come back to civilian practice and will open the firm’s Washington D.C. office at One Constitution Avenue N.E. His 30-year legal career has spanned various military and civilian lawyer, judge advocate and military judge positions, and during that time he has represented clients in a vast range of legal proceedings. His practice includes personal injury, malpractice, insurance bad faith, and product liability law.
He also has served with distinction on the Capital University Adjunct Faculty; Faculty, National College of Advocacy; Diplomate, National Board of Trial Advocacy; Advocate, American Board of Trial Advocates; Member, National Panel of Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association; Chairman, the Military Law Section of The Association of Trial Lawyers of America; Secretary and Trustee of the Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers; and Member, Executive Committee, Franklin County Trial Lawyers Association.
In 1988, General McCarthy helped found the Columbus-based law firm. At that time, it was known as McCarthy Palmer Volkema & Becker.
Today Volkema Thomas includes 10 lawyers on staff, all of whom practice a vast range of tort litigation. Last year Volkema Thomas opened an office in Cincinnati, with lawyers at that branch primarily concentrating their work on Qui Tam (whistleblower, false claims) actions. Qui Tam, under the False Claims Act which was amended in 1986, allows persons and entities with evidence of fraud against federal programs or contracts to sue the wrongdoer on behalf of the United States Government.
“Our firm is honored to have Dennis join us again after so many years of faithfully serving our country,” Partner Daniel R. Volkema said. “Dennis McCarthy is one of those exceptional people who bring integrity, wit and intelligence to the practice of law. We are particularly excited about the perspective his military background will bring to our federal false claims practice.”
General McCarthy, a graduate of the University of Dayton, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 1967, and following basic training he was transferred to the 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade in the Republic of Vietnam, serving as a platoon commander.
Upon return to the U.S. in 1969, he served the Marines Corps as an inspector-instructor before being selected to attend law school. Following graduation, he functioned as a Judge Advocate and Military Judge at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. After promotion to Major, he resigned his regular commission in 1978 and transferred to the Marine Corps Reserve, and then entered private practice in Columbus.
He was called back to active duty during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and was selected for promotion to the grade of Brigadier General in 1992. As a General Officer, he commanded the Marine Corps Reserve Support Command; was Deputy Commander, First Marine Expeditionary Force; commanded the Third Marine Division, and became the first Reserve General Officer to command an active duty Marines’ division as Vice Director of Operations U. S. Atlantic Command.
Recalled again to active duty in 1999, he was the Director of Operations and Plans, U. S. Atlantic Command, and then Director of the Reserve Affairs Division, Headquarters, USMC. In June 2001, he was promoted to the grade of Lieutenant General and assumed duties as Commander, Marine Forces Reserve, and Commander, Marine Forces North, in 2004.
e relinquished those commands last June after having led the Marine Corps Reserve during its largest mobilization since the Korean War, and retired from active duty Aug. 1. He holds numerous military decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V," and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Since retirement from the USMC, he has served as Executive Director of the Reserve Officers Association of the United States, a Congressionally-chartered organization dedicated to the development and support of the military policy of the United States.
