Truck accidents account for numerous fatalities and serious injury in Franklin County and throughout Ohio. Sometimes one accident can begin a chain reaction leading to additional incidents. Unfortunately, if the subsequent crash involves a tractor-trailer, the potential for loss of life often increases.
When multiple accidents occur, it is not always clear what happened. An accident reconstruction team must work diligently to discover the cause for truck accidents and assign responsibility where appropriate.
On August 4th, a multi-vehicle crash occurred shortly before 5:30 a.m. on I-475/US 23 in Toledo. The accidents claimed 3 lives and seriously injured one other person.
The first accident occurred when a pick-up truck entered the highway and collided with a tractor-trailer, causing the pick-up to spin out of control. A 48-year old female tractor-trailer operator stopped to help, as did a 40-year-old female driving a Toyota Camry. In just a few moments a second, fatal accident occurred.
A motorcyclist and a tandem-trailer rig both crashed into the accident scene. Killed were the motorcyclist, the female Camry driver, and the driver of the pick-up involved in the first collision. The female tractor-trailer operator jumped from the bridge to avoid the crash. She remains in critical condition at the University of Toledo Medical Center.
The northbound lanes of the freeway were closed for 8 hours to investigate. Central to the investigation is why the tandem-trailer crashed into the accident scene in the first place. No initial evidence, such as skid marks, revealed when or if the driver applied his brakes prior to the collision. Witnesses say he "plowed right into" the crash site. The body of the motorcyclist, thrown far from his bike, was found in an adjacent field.
The families of the victims, at a time when they are fighting to cope with their grief, will also want to know the cause and responsibility for the fatal truck accidents. In addition to their loss, they may be trying to figure out how to pay for medical and funeral expenses, as well as lost wages. In Franklin County, an attorney who handles personal injury claims arising from motor vehicle accidents may offer some peace of mind for the victims and their families.
