Ohio crane accident at steel mill kills two workers

Just last week we wrote about the importance of injury and accident prevention at the workplace. Although Ohio employers can relay on the state's workers' compensation system to help pay for injured workers, we wrote that this did not displace the importance of being proactive and taking measures to ensure employee safety.

Unfortunately, a fatal workplace accident occurred this week that instantly killed two employees. The accident occurred in Perry Township, Ohio and the two men who were killed worked for an excavating company based in Canton.

Shortly after lunch, the men were apparently working outside of a steel mill when a large piece of crane fell on top of them. At the time, it was unclear was caused the piece of crane to drop but state and federal investigators are expected to look into the fatal accident. The men were apparently prepping to lift a load when the incident occurred.

Accidents like this, that occur during the course of employment often result in workers' compensation payments. In the case of workplace injuries, workers' compensation can cover costs of medical expenses and time away from the job site need to recover.

Sadly, these men were not only injured, they actually lost their lives. But even without workers' compensation, the victims and their families still have a legal course of action. Like many large construction jobs, there are different parties and companies working together. In this instance, neither the employer of the two men, nor the steel mill operated the crane that killed the men. A third party owned and operated the crane, which creates the possibility of a third-party claim against the crane manufacturer, owner, operator or even all three if any one or all negligently led to the death of the two workers. A wrongful death claim or personal injury claim can garner compensation for the victim or his or her family and their loss.
