Car passengers still at high risk in truck accident

Forty years of statistics suggest that, in spite of advances made in technology, a wreck between a passenger vehicle and a tractor-trailer will not end well for those in the smaller vehicle. Regardless of the actual cause of the wreck, a truck accident is likely to result in passengers in cars or other smaller vehicles suffering serious or fatal injuries simply due to the size of the truck. Sadly, many Ohio families have endured the tragic consequences that typically accompany these collisions.

There are quite a few factors that could contribute to a tractor-trailer wreck. Anything from mechanical failures, road conditions and truck driver error and fatigue may be involved. One agency has kept records that break down various factors in these wrecks and the numbers of fatalities that have resulted from them.

The time of day and the day of the week appear to influence these statistics, with the mid-day hours on Thursdays being the most deadly. Conversely, the late-evening hours on Sundays appear to be the least dangerous time period, though an accident can obviously occur at any time. Surprisingly, more than half of fatal wrecks involving large trucks occur on a major roadway other than an interstate.

While the numbers of fatalities in a large truck accident have declined since 1975, the statistics point to a slight upswing in fatal wrecks in the recent past for passenger vehicle occupants. The report focused on deaths and did not provide information regarding non-fatal injuries. Ohio residents who have suffered a serious injury or even lost a loved one in an accident involving a large truck (or other vehicle) may be entitled to pursue a personal injury or a wrongful death lawsuit against the parties who are deemed responsible in order to seek compensation for the financial harm that usually accompanies these tragedies.
